Boy oh boy! Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream is unveiling a brand new, super duper great, amazing like fireworks in your mouth ice cream sundae especially for the Cal Anderson 4th of July Party!!!!

This culinary creation will be called The Cal Andersundae. A very, very apt name, isn’t it?

The sundae will include:  the ice cream flavor of your choice adorned with balsamic strawberries, sprinkled  with fried basil leaves, lavished with candied walnuts, and drizzled with a delicious strawberry coulis! Mmm mm good is right.

Hurry in quick to try one for yourself starting this Friday to get pumped for the best Independence Day Celebration ever. We’re going to. But, really, we are. Because everyone knows that there’s no saying no to good ice cream.

Hi Everyone!

FYI, the questionnaire formerly known as Proust will now be called The Adventurer Profile. Also, look for a brand new INTERNATIONAL edition of the Adventurer Profile to debut soon. This week we talked to local copywriter and bodacious babe Kindra Meyer. When you’re done reading her answers, go check out her vair vair sexy website!

kindra-alessandra

What skill do you want to learn?

Any. Specifically, though I have always wanted to make radishes look like flowers. I think that’s pretty neat. And whittle. I have a childhood friend who dropped out of medical school and has spent the last ten years whittling wooden dildos. It’s fascinating.

Food and drink you donʼt want to live without?

Pop rocks and diet coke – foam party in my mouth! You’re all invited!

What’s the scariest thing you can think of?

Being uninspired.

What is your favourite party supply?

Lil Wonder, my stuffed pygmy party goat (RIP friend).

Your favorite book of the moment?

I’m re-reading Amy Sedaris I Like You, and I’m also midway through Twilight and The Audacity of Hope. Amy, Obama and Vampires. Mrawr! Sexytown!!!

Describe your dream party place.

1 part Warhol’s Factory, 1 part My little Pony Stables, in a time bending spacecraft naturally, so we could party anywhere in space and time throughout the galaxy.

What is the evil version of you like?

Exactly like me. Only with an eye-patch.

What gives you confidence?

My willingness to take risks. My ability to make people feel good. My work at Wexley. My rack.

Name four essential elements of a good party.

Silly string, a miniature pony, dip, and copious amounts of sweet tea vodka.

What do you appreciate most about a party host?

Someone who wears an apron, smacks me around a little and lets me sleep on their lawn.

Favorite adventure supply?

Headdress.

Describe the best party you ever attended.

This one.

Hotel room or campsite?

Pitching a tent in a hotel room, and cutting a hole in the ceiling.

Do you have a style icon?

If Dolly Parton, Amy Sedaris, and Betsey Johnson had a three way, my style icon would be their baby.

Where is your next adventure destination?

Your house. Then, Brazil.

If you could teach a class about anything in the world ever, what would you teach?

I would teach people how to mom dance.

Your motto?

You have to believe we are magic, nothing can stand in our way.

What is your spirit animal?

The Clamicorn. 1/2 clam, 1/2 unicorn. All class.

DUDE!

The Adventure School just got paid a huge compliment. We’ve been featured on the blog lo & behold! The post talks about how cool the AS website design is (props to our designer-friends at also-online) and how the Adventure School would be such a rad place to work (insider-intern perspective: true story!)

THANK YOU, LO & BEHOLD!

Suuuuuuuuueey!

Last weekend Aviva, Cori and a large number of their hungry pals attended a gustatory festivity of epic proportions where the guests pigged out on- what else?- a whole pig. This year marked the 7th Annual Capitol Hill Pig Roast Bacchanalia for Richard, Ben, Martine and Fred , an extravaganza that featured a competitive Twister tournament, one table devoted solely to different types of salads (some with bacon because clearly there was not enough pig already), EIGHT sour cream apple pies all baked by the same person,  and two kegs of home-brewed beer.

That may sound like a gluttonous amount of food. But Aviva swears by the end of the party, which lasted through lunch and dinner, it had all been eaten. Yes. The entire pig was gone.

Snout to tail cooking, a popular practice dating back to times when people had names like Odo and pushed plowshares all day, is making a comeback. We think this is great for a variety of reasons:

  • There’s just something about sharing the experience of eating an entire animal that brings people together. Really, that comment wasn’t meant to sound snarky. It’s undeniable that cooking a simple, delicious feast like a pig roast is a great way to bring people together.
  • Though a long process that can last 24 hours or more, snout to tail cooking is a smart and conscientious party food that cuts down and waste and ultimately on cost.
  • People all over the country are embracing snout to tail cooking for a good cause! Cochon 555, a touring culinary event to foster awareness about the benefits of eating heritage foods, for farmers, chefs, and diners alike. Five chefs prepare five heritage pigs any way they like, and five winemakers provide pairings for each chef. Whoever cooks the tastiest swine wins. The coolest part is the fact that Cochon 555 proceeds go to a charity  of the host city’s choice. Cochon 555 recently came to Seattle in March. Local chefs competed for the crown and raised money for Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance and The Good Farmer Fund.

The summer is a perfect time for a pig roast. So, if you’re thinking about throwing a party…buy a pig and go whole hog.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Attention Adventurers!

Crawl Space Gallery, one of our favorites, is about to unveil “Liquid Crystal,” a new exhibition by Derek Larson. This project requires the artist to complete a “Studio Intensive Residency,” literally a 24/7 confinement to the gallery space preceding the show’s opening.

The rules of the Residency are reassuring: ”A hot plate, refrigerator, toilet, sink and air mattress will be provided.”

…kind of.

Read more about Derek’s show in The Seattle Times.

WHERE:

A few days ago, one of our new blog readers asked an excellent question:

“OK, this is fun – what’s the next event? Are these all private or are any public?”

Typically, Adventure School events are private affairs, but as luck would have it, the month of July will feature TWO events open to the public! Can I get a really huge WOOHOO!!?

The first event will happen on good old Independence Day in Cal Anderson Park and– get this– it’s FREE. Now, a description to make you wish it were the 4th of July already:

The Cal Anderson Park Alliance announces the 7th Annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic: a day of music, food and fun to celebrate our country and community. This free event is open to the public and will be held at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, Saturday, July 4th from 12 to 5 pm.

Bands hitting the stage all day will include kids-jammers Recess Monkey, the urban Latin beats of Picoso, the lo-fi pop of Katharine Hepburn’s Voice, and the funky soul sounds of Lady A and the Baby Blues Funk Band, not to mention buskers galore.

Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream will make root beer floats, and delicious treats will be available from Via Tribunali as well as Wandering Wieners. Caffé Vita will be on-site with coffee; attendees will also be able to enjoy free cotton candy. Party-goers will be able to participate in the All-Park Parade, try the11th Avenue Inn Root Beer tasting garden, and get involved with other free activities including a Spin Art Bike, patriotic tie-dye, a pie-eating contest, Urban Family Portraits (Any type of family!), Pet/human look-alike contest and more!

Intro Flyer

We’re also very excited about our July 14th Bastille Day party at The Corson Building. This event is going to be awesome, but you will have to fork over some moolah to attend, $25-$50 to be imprecise.

Starting at 3pm, bring the fam down to Georgetown for some inter-generational debauchery on this national partying holiday from France. We’ll have kids bands including Schoolyard Heroes and Casper Babypants, carnival games, and delicious Frenchified eats including crepes and oysters along with a variety of kid-friendly foods.

As the evening wears on, we’ll produce sparklers, some grown-up bands, and can can girls galore!

Even though Bastille Day falls on a Tuesday this year, this is an event you won’t want to miss. Official poster coming soon!

Hey Hey!
Guess what time it is? Time for another Adventure School Proust Questionnaire! Yaaaaay!
This week we’re featuring our friend Buster, creator of the super sweet iPhone application Locavore and author of a really classy blog called Enjoymentland.  This week, we caught up with Buster between sips of espresso and fits of genius to ask him a few questions about some of the most pressing issues of our time.
profile-cal-anderson-1
If you ever changed your name, what would you call yourself?
It turns out I’ve already changed my name twice (Erik Benson -> Buster McLeod -> Buster Benson).  But if I was to change my name a third time, it would be to Maximiliano Bombastus von Millionaire Billionaire Benson.

What is the food or drink you don’t want to live without?
Gelato with hot espresso poured over it and a sprinkling of pizza.

Who’s your favorite adventurer: Indiana Jones or Luke Skywalker?
Indiana: he’s not as tortured.

Dance party or Cocktail party?
The latter former, and the former later!

Do you have any life goals?
Oh geez.  I started a company that was all about making big life goals (43things.com).  My current big picture life goals are to start a family with my amazing wife, create the frugalest, ultra-minimalist, tech-startup in history, and to make Seattle a better place to live, work, and have fun.

What are the four essential elements of good party?
An empty milk bottle, mint and chip ice cream, a lazy polar bear, and a labyrinth.

What is your favorite finger food?
I have to answer this one seriously: sushi! And anything that could be within fingers’ reach of sushi.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a genetic biologist that spliced pet genes together into new amazing combinations.  Like the squid/kitten/butterfly, and the monkey/fox/scorpion.  It was going to be called Invent-A-Pet.  Hey, maybe it still is.  Hurry up, genetics!

What’s the moment of your day that you always consider as an adventure?
Waking up next to Kellianne, going to sleep next to Kellianne.  Awwwwwwww!

What gives you confidence?
I have a power animal. He’s a galloping polar bear that runs right behind me pushing me forward.  My power image is kayaking deftly through rapids.  I also have an ideal scene that I look at when I close my eyes… somewhere between a castle and a hotel and a warehouse and a party and a home, surrounded by amazing friends and creative geniuses.  And alcohol sometimes.

What is the scariest thing you can think of?
The scariest thing I can think of is being temporarily possessed by fear and betraying the people I love.  And then being unparalyzed by that fear and realizing what I had done, and that it was irreversible.

What’s your most common reoccurring dream?
Probably the one where I’m chewing bubble gum and I’m trying to spit the gum out but it keeps getting bigger and bigger in my mouth and no matter how much bubble gum I stealthily stash in planters and under the table while nobody’s looking, I can’t get it all out and I can’t breathe very well.

What’s the one thing you would change about yourself if you could?
I guess I would change the fact that I can’t read minds.  Even not being able to read micro-facial-expressions on the sly while not appearing creepy would be a good thing to change about myself.

What aspect of your personality are you very proud of?
I like that I’m really lucky.  Except in casinos.

What is your favorite adventure supply?
A taxi that can go anywhere.

What is your spirit animal?
A whale/polar bear/fox that lives at the bottom of the ocean and the end of the universe, and stirs a big pot of rainbow sherbet when I’m not in need of spirit-helping.

Your motto?
I have had several: In it to win it, higher highs and lower lows, double down, no problem, etc.  Right now my motto is a little more conservative, due to my current strategies.  It is: FRUGALITY TO THE MAX + The Extragood Life!
