Archive for July, 2009 They’re finally here! Photos from the off-the-hook-est Independence Day party in the greater Seattle area! These puppies were taken by local photographer and Adventure School wedding alum Eliza Truitt . As you can see, the party was mega kiddie-friendly and family (of all kinds)-oriented. And that’s how it should be on the 4th of July. Because what are we in the US of A if not one large, diverse, rockin’ family? What an awesome belated gift from the month of July!

Tracy and Arthur’s wedding was a ton of fun. From the taco truck to the outdoor hookah lounge, this fun couple did it their way! Check out the photos of their amazing nuptials and PARTY! We helped these lovebirds with their Tish, Ketubah signing, ceremony, horah, Father of the Groom Bellydance Birthday Surprise, and major-rager Reception Dance Party. Photos by Ryan Flynn. Today we’re featuring a vair vair cool human being, the one and only Aaron Huffman, Art Director of my most fav newspaper on the planet, The Stranger. And if you haven’t already noticed, a trend amongst our adventurers seems to be emerging; quite a few of them claim they wouldn’t want to live without sushi. Perhaps The Adventure School will throw a sushi party for all of them someday? One can only dream…
What skill do you want to learn? I’d like to learn to play the piano, but I doubt I ever will. Food and drink you donʼt want to live without? Sushi and margaritas. What’s the scariest thing you can think of? Bugs! I hate bugs. What is your favourite party supply? Wigs usually bring out the best in many a partygoer, although I usually prefer to stand back and watch from a safe distance. Your favorite book of the moment? The City & The City, by China Mieville, which I’m about half-way through right now. Describe your dream party place. Someplace with lots of nooks and crannies, different places to gather, things to look at and discuss (art and such). I’m sure that no matter how many choices there are, people would likely end up in the kitchen anyway. Also, it should be directly adjacent to a beach. And it it should have a hot tub. What is the evil version of you like? Much more self-indulgent. The evil me would buy even more guitars and drink a lot more expensive bourbon. What gives you confidence? New clothes. Is that shallow? Name four essential elements of a good party. Music, lots of people I know, some kind of alcohol I’ve never tried before, and an hour-long drunken conversation about how great [insert name of dead/retired rock band here] were. What do you appreciate most about a party host? A little effort in the food department. A great hors d’oeuvre, even just some good cheese, can make all the difference. Favorite adventure supply? The perfect bag. The smallest one I can get away with. Describe the best party you ever attended. This isn’t exactly a single party, but earlier this year we went down to Sayulita for a friend’s 40th birthday. The ten of us ate street food, sat on the beach, basked in the heat, and drank tequila and watery beer late into the night. All the elements of a great party, spread out over the better part of a week. Hotel room or campsite? I’d love to be able to say campsite, but I really am a hotel room kind of person. It doesn’t have to be luxurious, but I am partial to indoor plumbing. Do you have a style icon? David Bowie, but I’m not nearly brave enough to pull off any sort of Bowie-esque outfit. Where is your next adventure destination? Vienna, followed by Bruges and Zurich, in September! If you could teach a class about anything in the world ever, what would you teach? Making a French Dip sandwich. It’s the only thing I’ve perfected. Your motto? Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. What is your spirit animal? Anything that moves really slow and spends all of its time either eating, sleeping, or sitting in a tree. Mike Prevette is a genius. This is his video of the photobooth at the Bastille Day Fete!

The genius Buster Benson, Mike Prevette, Chris Jones trio created a whimsical wonder station at Tuesday’s Bastille Day Fete at The Corson Building: a magical picture taking mirror! The pictures are up! Check them out! No password needed. Here are some of our fav flicks:
As seasoned adventurers, everyone at The Adventure School knows a slew people doing a spectrum of fascinating things out there in the wide, wild world. For many many moons now, we’ve been trying to bring it on home and get these fearless explorers to give us the goods on their exotic locales and far-from-ordinary projects. Can you smell that faint aroma of success wafting through the air? Because we finally did it! Today we’ve so excited to feature our very first INTERNATIONAL adventurer, Jodie! Any kind of introduction I could make would take the wind out of Jodie’s sail, so I’m going to let her explain herself because she’ll do herself and Israel justice in a way that I, an Israel virgin, simply can’t. 1. Who are you? 2. What are you doing? Living in Jerusalem for a year as I start my first year of rabbinical school… learning hebrew, exploring Israel, and hanging out with all sorts of interesting people 3. Where are you doing it? Jerusalem 3 1/2. Why you have to be there and not at home to do it? Well… my seminary (Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion a.k.a. the Reform movement’s seminary) requires that all rabbinical students spend their first year studying in Israel. 4. Why are you doing this? I’ve wanted to be a rabbi since I was 16…12 years later, here I am- making it happen. 5. If you had to do something else, what would you do? I’d be a vagabond, cooking my way around the world. 4. What has been your strangest cross-cultural encounter? So far, things have been relatively un-strange… though some observations: Israel does not believe in ice. Apparently the idea that a cup of ice may include more than 2 cubes does not really hit home here. I’ve also had 2 israeli cab drivers who taught me more hebrew than my hebrew school teachers. 5. What’s the best foreign custom/fashion statement/food preparation you want to adopt yourself? So far, the cooking and fresh fruits & veggies situation have been heavenly… I think every meal should include chopped tomatos and cukes with lemon juice and olive oil– including breakfast. Oh– and put fresh mint in your lemonade. Then turn it into an ice slushie. You’ll be happy. 6. Anything else we should know? A few things: always have fresh watermelon ready to cut up when guests arrive… More from me later–I’m still a newbie here (less than 2 weeks!) but I have a whole year ahead of me– so I’ll be sure to update!
bastille-day-at-the-corson-building from Mike Prevette on Vimeo. At our The Corson Building Bastille Day Fete we welcomed over 350 people into a french village for a night (and day!) The party was bumping from 3 p.m. to the stroke of midnight. Kids, French people, scenesters, foodies, families, chickens, rockers, neighbors, crepe enthusiasts and dreamers all mingled together under a tri-color canopy of tissue-paper bursts playing games and eating delicious foods. The entertainment included Caspar Babypants aka Chris Ballew of The Presidents of the United States of America, Schoolyard Heroes, The Pharmacy and Can Can dancing by The beautiful Atomic Bombshells. Savory Corson crepes, oysters, and stew were eaten en masse and les boozes were enjoyed by all, including French specialties kir and pastis. Someone named Michelle won dinner cooked by Matt Dillon as a reward for supporting The Vera Project through buying some raffle tickets. Young and old alike went nuts in the Mungo Thomson Skyspace Bouncehouse (2007) provided by Western Bridge Gallery. Francosonic DeeDay Jack nee DJ Jacque ran a crazed dance floor while people made bike-powered spin-art, got psychic readings and particpated in chicken races. An epic fete for the ages.
