Archive for August, 2010 Hullo Adventurers. On our most recent trip to Seoul, our focus was on the food. Breakfast was a stone grilled egg sandwich bought outside our hostel. Lunch was bulgogi and Nakji Bokkeumbap fried in a giant wok at our table. Dinner: Seafood scallion pancakes washed down with Doenjang-Tzigae. The list goes on. We forced ourselves to walk around the city so that we’d be appropriately hungry enough to appreciate our next meal – a glutton’s exercise regime. Gastronomical Heaven. The city is so fantastically cosmopolitan and rife with community based culture. Highlights: fractal laser shows on the Cheonggyecheon River that conjured up giant projections of robotic flowers, the school children that swarmed the Rodin exhibition at the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art, and above all, street markets that teeter with the weight of every product I could possibly imagine. Bring empty suitcases to this city, adventurers – Seoul is the place to shop. Even the subway stations all have their own malls. If you are looking for a cheap place to stay – consider the hundreds of hostels in the Honggik University area. If not, the Hilton in Namsan Park gives you an incredible view of the N Seoul Tower. Explore the Lotte empire – there is an underground mall (or rather, labyrinth) devoted to duty free goods. Walk around Myeong-dong at night to see the street performers mime, dance and sing. Follow it up with a bottle of Soju and some fried octopus – but be warned – this innocuous looking liquor packs quite the punch! In short, adventurers, if you’re looking for an urban adventure that has a dizzying carousel of delicious foods, serene palaces and retail therapy, come to Seoul. It’s a sensory delight. Until next time adventurers. This is Gao Gao reporting from the Mainland. 1 comment

See you there! Hullo Adventurers, Last night I went to see Swan Lake, at the Water Cube. Enough said. I have few words to describe the experience: Glitter, pogo sticks and tight tights. I am also depending heavily on my Adventurephone photos to tell the story. The Moscow Ballet Company excellent – the synchronised swan diving even better. If you come to Beijing, Adventurers, I shall also bring you into the water park next door. They have a Turbo Basin that shoots you into a sea of floating (fake) jellyfish at breakneck speeds. It is beyond cool. Until next time Adventurers, (from Shanghai) GG Friend of adventure, Molly Moon, has started an ice cream revolution as of late! Anyone who has tasted the sweetness of Scout Mint knows what I am talking about. You can find her any given day on Capitol Hill or in Wallingford at her Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream Shops delivering the masses from their ice creamlessness. AND NOW, she has a mobile ice cream truck hitting the mean streets and cooling down the hot city with scoops of vegan Theo Coconut Kiss and ultra creamy Balsamic Strawberry. Molly Moon’s is a great woman-owned business and Molly Moon, the woman, is a huge fan of beautiful, walkable Capitol Hill. Come meet Molly at the Mobile City event this Thursday, and get to know her more right here in her Adventurer Profile!
What skill do you want to learn? The scariest thing you can think of? Not being able to breathe. Your favorite party supply? Lots and lots of pretty dishes — and flowers! Just finished The Help. Super good. Describe your dream party place.
One of my favorite meals of all time is a pasta dish made with linguine and freshly dug manila clams from Desolation Sound. We made it one night while boating in the area last week… so delicious! 1lb. dried italian linguine saute the sliced garlic in olive oil until tender, over low heat, so as not to brown. add white wine, chili flakes and simmer 5 minutes over low heat. serves 4 to 6. As promised, last week, here is some more information about next week’s totally boss FREE OUTDOOR NIGHTTIME PARTY ON CAP HILL! The party will kick-off a Capitol Hill-Wide Summer Weekend Sale!
