Hello adventureland! One of our dear friends of adventure, Bert Rodriguez will be giving a lecture tomorrow at The Henry Art Gallery. I think you should come because I want you to meet him. Also, if you like to go to Miami, you can visit him there sometime when he is not in Seattle. Bert is very funny and so I assume that you will like him. Also, there will be cupcakes. If you have ever wanted to eat cupcakes with a conceptual artist, tomorrow is your chance. I think it would be a great free date, a good way to impress the person of your liking with your taste in cupcakes and activities. 7 to 9 at the Henry Auditorium.

Oh, anddddd, the southernmost incorporated place in the contiguous United States is in Florida in Key West. The northernmost incorporated place in the contiguous United States is in Washington. Let’s hear it for SUMAS! Road trip with us! See you tomorrow at the Henry! Find out WAY more about Bert’s work below:

Here’s a snippet I stole from his website: “In conjunction with the University of Washington School of Art’s summer residency project, the Henry Art Gallery is pleased to announce a lecture by Miami-based visiting artist Bert Rodriguez. He will speak about the history of his work, his art-making practice in addition to the forms and methods generally used within the framework of contemporary conceptual art.

Following Bert’s Lecture there will a Q&A cupcake social in the Café sponsored by Trophy Cupcakes.

Friday, September 3rd 2010 | 7:00-9:00pm
Henry Auditorium + Cafe
Admission is Free

Bert has exhibited in galleries and institutions worldwide. Most recently, THE MAN CALLED BERT, at Annarumma Gallery in Naples, Italy (2010); I’LL CROSS THAT BRIDGE WHEN GET TO IT, at Fredric Snitzer Gallery in Miami, FL (2010); IN YOUR OWN IMAGE: THE BEST OF BERT RODRIGUEZ VOL. I; at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, FL. (2009); WHERE YOU END AND I BEGIN, at Frieze Art Fair (2008); and IN THE BEGINNING…, at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2008). In 2009, Lawrimore Projects introduced Rodriguez to Seattle with a work in the group exhibition SPITE HOUSE, and was hosted by Western Bridge on the occasion of PARENTHESIS where he created A WALL I BUILT WITH MY FATHER and A MEAL I MADE WITH MY MOTHER”.

Hullo Adventurers.

On our most recent trip to Seoul, our focus was on the food. Breakfast was a stone grilled egg sandwich bought outside our hostel. Lunch was bulgogi and Nakji Bokkeumbap fried in a giant wok at our table. Dinner: Seafood scallion pancakes washed down with Doenjang-Tzigae. The list goes on. We forced ourselves to walk around the city so that we’d be appropriately hungry enough to appreciate our next meal – a glutton’s exercise regime. Gastronomical Heaven.

The city is so fantastically cosmopolitan and rife with community based culture. Highlights: fractal laser shows on the Cheonggyecheon River that conjured up giant projections of robotic flowers, the school children that swarmed the Rodin exhibition at the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art, and above all, street markets that teeter with the weight of every product I could possibly imagine. Bring empty suitcases to this city, adventurers – Seoul is the place to shop. Even the subway stations all have their own malls.

If you are looking for a cheap place to stay – consider the hundreds of hostels in the Honggik University area. If not, the Hilton in Namsan Park gives you an incredible view of the N Seoul Tower. Explore the Lotte empire – there is an underground mall (or rather, labyrinth) devoted to duty free goods. Walk around Myeong-dong at night to see the street performers mime, dance and sing. Follow it up with a bottle of Soju and some fried octopus – but be warned – this innocuous looking liquor packs quite the punch!

In short, adventurers, if you’re looking for an urban adventure that has a dizzying carousel of delicious foods, serene palaces and retail therapy, come to Seoul. It’s a sensory delight.

The Moscow Ballet Company excellent – the synchronised swan diving even better. If you come to Beijing, Adventurers, I shall also bring you into the water park next door. They have a Turbo Basin that shoots you into a sea of floating (fake) jellyfish at breakneck speeds. It is beyond cool.

Until next time Adventurers, (from Shanghai)

Friend of adventure, Molly Moon, has started an ice cream revolution as of late! Anyone who has tasted the sweetness of Scout Mint knows what I am talking about. You can find her any given day on Capitol Hill or in Wallingford at her Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream Shops delivering the masses from their ice creamlessness. AND NOW, she has a mobile ice cream truck hitting the mean streets and cooling down the hot city with scoops of vegan Theo Coconut Kiss and ultra creamy Balsamic Strawberry. Molly Moon’s is a great woman-owned business and Molly Moon, the woman, is a huge fan of beautiful, walkable Capitol Hill. Come meet Molly at the Mobile City event this Thursday, and get to know her more right here in her Adventurer Profile!

What skill do you want to learn?
I’d like to get better at singing and playing the guitar and piano. I’d like to learn to play the cello – and the real way to paint with watercolors. It would also be nice to know how to be a better girlfriend.
Food and drink you don’t want to live without?
Croissants and coffee (oh – and ice cream)

The scariest thing you can think of?

Not being able to breathe.

Your favorite party supply?

Lots and lots of pretty dishes — and flowers!
Your favorite book of the moment?

Just finished The Help. Super good.

Describe your dream party place.
Treehouse Point, Fall City, WA. The river and trees and tree houses and a hidden stage for bands in the woods!
What is the evil version of you like?
Bossy, bitchy and big-boned!
What gives you confidence?
spreadsheets
Name four essential elements of a good party.
Hilarious guests, messy food, tasty drinks, games
What do you appreciate most about a party
host?
She or he can make seamless introductions and make everyone feel as comfortable as old friends.
Favorite adventure supply?
Rope?
Describe the best party you ever attended.
One good party was when my bestie and I threw an underwear party in college. Everyone had to put all of their clothes in a cubby at the door. Then there were strong drinks and lots of body toppings on all the end tables – chocolate sauce & whipped cream & cherries.
Hotel room or campsite?
Both!
Do you have a style icon?
Ugh. You’re making me say this out loud? Am I allowed to say Carrie Bradshaw? I’m probably more like Charlotte though. But it’s ironic, I swear!
Where is your next adventure destination?
Kailua, Hawaii
If you could teach a class about anything in
the world ever, what would you teach?
Survival skills in canoes
Your motto?
Who doesn’t love ice cream?
What is your spirit animal?
Maybe a hippo? They seem relaxed. And I do like a nice bath.

1lb. dried italian linguine
5 dozen fresh desolation sound manila clams (ideal size, approximately 1-1.5″ across)
4 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, peeled & sliced very thinly
1/2 cup italian parsley, chopped
zest of 2 lemons (about 1 tablespoon)
juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1-2 tablespoons, to taste)
3/4 cup dry white wine
3/4 cup clam nectar
1 teaspoon chili pepper flakes (or to taste)
grated parmesan cheese

saute the sliced garlic in olive oil until tender, over low heat, so as not to brown. add white wine, chili flakes and simmer 5 minutes over low heat.
rinse clams and place them in a pot big enough to hold double the capacity. cover and turn heat to high. do not add water!
as soon as clams steam and open, turn off heat. remove 3/4 cup of broth and add it to the garlic and olive oil mixture. keep clams covered until needed.
meanwhile, heat water for pasta, add a tablespoon of salt and bring to a boil. cook the pasta until al dente (about one minute less that called for on the package). drain and return to pot.
pour “sauce” over the pasta, add the chopped parsley and lemon zest and some parmesan cheese. toss. places the pasts and some of the sauce in bowls, place a dozen or so clams in the shell on top. serve.

serves 4 to 6.
