We’re thrilled to be able to showcase such global talent here at The Adventure School, and are excited to share with you her Adventurer Profile!

1 what skill do you want to learn?

There are always so many! Recently, batik dying, basket weaving, and weaving in general..

2 food and drink you don’t want to live without?

Aside from pizza and Japanese curry, the things I’ve been having to live without but really love are rootbeer and kale, not necessarily consumed together. Thanks to the help of some friends, I am growing kale out my window since it doesn’t seem to exist in France, if only I could find a solution for getting rootbeer in France!

3 the scariest thing you can think of?

Working in an office forever! Or dying in general

4 your favorite party supply?

It’s a toss up between balloons and streamers

5 your favorite book of the moment?

I just finished reading Bossy Pants by Tina Fey and loved it. Also a friend recently sent me Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills by Raleigh Briggs. Can’t recommend that one enough!

6 describe your dream party place.

A little castle on the beach in the south of France I once had the pleasure of staying at, and could imagine having the most beautiful and crazy parties there. There was a large ship parked in the sea, just in front of the castle while I was there. Image how amazing if you could have the party move between the two spaces.. if only!

7 what is the evil version of you like?

After eating too much sugar, or a lack of food, extremely impatient : /

8 what gives you confidence?

When I’m able to come up with crazy creative ideas, solutions etc..

9 name four essential elements of a good party.

Decorations, good atmosphere, nice friends with a few crazier friends in the mix, and good music.

10 what do you appreciate most about a party host?

Being able to enjoy themselves at the party.

11 favorite adventure supply?

Awesome backpacks

12 describe the best party you ever attended.

One of my favorites was a Halloween party thrown by the UCLA architecture department in a huge loft/warehouse in dowtown LA. I went with a friend and we didn’t really know anyone there but had the best time. Everyone was wearing super elaborate home-made costumes. There was one guy who was one of those pine tree car air fresheners, made entirely out of foam and he even had a tassle on his head that swung around like crazy when he was dancing. He also kept spraying the pine scented air freshener he brought with him.

13 hotel room or campsite?

Campsite if there’s a campfire, hotel room if there’s a pool!

14 do you have a style icon?

I’ve always loved the style of Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead, stylist Camille Bidault-Waddington and Sofia Copola.

15 where is your next adventure destination?

I’m heading to the countryside in England this summer and hopefully next year Japan!

16 if you could teach a class about anything in the world ever, what would you teach?

I’d love to teach something about ecological health for yourself and the planet.

17 what is your motto?

I don’t really have a motto but I find the phrase “if you pay peanuts you get monkeys” pretty awesome.

18 what is your spirit animal?

Perhaps a flying squirrel.

Here in Seattle, we’re anxiously awaiting the arrival of Lia Ices, as she heads our way for her performance at The Crocodile with The Sea & Cake this coming Friday, December 2nd. Her sophomore album, Grown Unknown, has been a constant companion for us since its release in January of 2011, and we are so looking forward to hearing more of what she’s created during the last ten months. She was lovely enough to share with us some of her thoughts on ADVENTURE, what her spirit animal is, and what she finds to be inspiring. We love her motto best. See you Seattleites at the show on Friday?

I made her bouquet for the aisle, and we had decorated the restaurant all day. We made blueberry pies and served them to the guests (she’s a professional baker). Best homemade love wedding. Bride and groom were both in white.

Good afternoon all!

Our weekly lectures series thus far has brought knowledgeable members from the fields of everyone from mycology to bird watching and brain mapping down to our storefront in Pioneer Square, and we wanted to be sure to inform you on the up-and-coming at the Adventure Store for August’s series, The Mind.

These next weeks will entail a series of special two-lecture nights by our very own Aviva Palmer and Erin Gainey. Tonight, August 9th will host a Manifestation Circle, with the objective of setting and defining intentions and needs in a group setting; following with Piñata making workshops on Wednesday the 10th, again on the 17th, including help from Becca Weiss.

On the 23rd repeat-Adventure School-magician Andrew Evans will present on Magic, with this to say and discuss:

“The lecture focuses on how magic is presented and how misdirection and theatricality can lead an audience to believe they are ”witnessing magic” rather than simply ”seeing a trick.” Specific topics include Covert and Overt Misdirection, Time Misdirection, Change Blindness, Attention Control Tactics, Character vs. Persona, Humor, Staging Techniques, and Theatrical Conventions.”

More to be announced! Lectures will begin at 6:00 p.m. on each Tuesday and Wednesday respectively of each week.

Thank you and we look forward to your visits.

-Miles

Jennifer Sung is an inspiration. She decided 4 years ago to leave her chemistry job at Johnson & Johnson in San Francisco. She traveled for a year throughout Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Spain and China, then moved to Seattle, and started looking for jobs in the culinary world. There were some low moments when Jennifer almost got pulled back into chemistry but she knew what she wanted and held out. Sung first joined the food industry as an ice cream maker for Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream. She then moved to Vashon Island and sous cheffed at Sea Breeze Farm’s La Boucherie where she honed her sharp cutting skills. Now Jennifer is a cheese maker at Kurtwood Farms and tomorrow she is teaching How To Cut A Chicken in The Adventure School Lecture Series. Sign up for the lecture and ask this woman more questions about food, adventure and how to live life.
