Hey Hey!
Guess what time it is? Time for another Adventure School Proust Questionnaire! Yaaaaay!
This week we’re featuring our friend Buster, creator of the super sweet iPhone application Locavore and author of a really classy blog called Enjoymentland. This week, we caught up with Buster between sips of espresso and fits of genius to ask him a few questions about some of the most pressing issues of our time.
![]() If you ever changed your name, what would you call yourself?
It turns out I’ve already changed my name twice (Erik Benson -> Buster McLeod -> Buster Benson). But if I was to change my name a third time, it would be to Maximiliano Bombastus von Millionaire Billionaire Benson.
What is the food or drink you don’t want to live without?
Gelato with hot espresso poured over it and a sprinkling of pizza.
Who’s your favorite adventurer: Indiana Jones or Luke Skywalker?
Indiana: he’s not as tortured.
Dance party or Cocktail party?
The latter former, and the former later!
Do you have any life goals?
Oh geez. I started a company that was all about making big life goals (43things.com). My current big picture life goals are to start a family with my amazing wife, create the frugalest, ultra-minimalist, tech-startup in history, and to make Seattle a better place to live, work, and have fun.
What are the four essential elements of good party?
An empty milk bottle, mint and chip ice cream, a lazy polar bear, and a labyrinth.
What is your favorite finger food?
I have to answer this one seriously: sushi! And anything that could be within fingers’ reach of sushi.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a genetic biologist that spliced pet genes together into new amazing combinations. Like the squid/kitten/butterfly, and the monkey/fox/scorpion. It was going to be called Invent-A-Pet. Hey, maybe it still is. Hurry up, genetics!
What’s the moment of your day that you always consider as an adventure?
Waking up next to Kellianne, going to sleep next to Kellianne. Awwwwwwww!
What gives you confidence?
I have a power animal. He’s a galloping polar bear that runs right behind me pushing me forward. My power image is kayaking deftly through rapids. I also have an ideal scene that I look at when I close my eyes… somewhere between a castle and a hotel and a warehouse and a party and a home, surrounded by amazing friends and creative geniuses. And alcohol sometimes.
What is the scariest thing you can think of? What’s your most common reoccurring dream?
Probably the one where I’m chewing bubble gum and I’m trying to spit the gum out but it keeps getting bigger and bigger in my mouth and no matter how much bubble gum I stealthily stash in planters and under the table while nobody’s looking, I can’t get it all out and I can’t breathe very well.
What’s the one thing you would change about yourself if you could?
I guess I would change the fact that I can’t read minds. Even not being able to read micro-facial-expressions on the sly while not appearing creepy would be a good thing to change about myself.
What aspect of your personality are you very proud of?
I like that I’m really lucky. Except in casinos.
What is your favorite adventure supply?
A taxi that can go anywhere.
What is your spirit animal?
A whale/polar bear/fox that lives at the bottom of the ocean and the end of the universe, and stirs a big pot of rainbow sherbet when I’m not in need of spirit-helping.
Your motto?
Just so you’re not too disappointed, the drinks might actually be green, but the people in attendance will definitely be. As far as I know. Seattle has joined a worldwide community of businesses bringing together environmentally-conscientious individuals from a variety of backgrounds using an “organic, self-organizing network” of meet-ups called Green Drinks. This month’s Seattle event will be hosted by trendy Synapse Product Development TOMORROW NIGHT, TUESDAY JUNE 9TH! Bring your own mug, tumbler, flute, or beverage container of your choice and drinks are FREE. What’s more, I heard a rumor that they’re going to have a Marimba band. Now that you REALLY want to go, here are the vitals:
WHERE: The Synapse Office, 1511 6th Ave. 4th Floor WHEN: !!TOMORROW!! 5:30-9:00 pm
We’ll be there. Hope you will be too.
It’s confirmed. I’m pretty sure I’ve stumbled into the sweetest summer internship in town. Last Friday, Cori and Aviva invited me to join them at Ambach & Rice gallery for a pre-opening party of artist Eric Yahnker’s new solo show, Naughty Teens/Garbanzo Beans. Not only did the fascinating, well-dressed artist-types provide perfect schmoozing material, but there was something else to make any unpaid intern’s ears perk up on the spot: free food. And good free food. Chef Matthew Dillion, owner of Sitka & Spruce and The Corson Building, provided an array of delicious and beautiful dishes that said artist-types balanced on one hand as they milled around the space admiring Eric’s work. This show was by far one of the most fulfilling I’ve seen in a long time in large part due to the unmistakable humorous streak that runs through Eric’s work, making his art easily accessible and exceedingly enjoyable. Coupled with his undeniable talent for drawing and an arsenal of clever pop culture references, Eric’s art jumps off the walls and demands that you pay attention to it. Right. Now. My favorite piece came from a series called “Selected Reading.” A very large drawing in graphite depicts Dorothy looking up from a copy of Sartre’s Nausea, apparently shocked by Sartre’s unapologetic stance. An easy to overlook piece in the corner of the gallery is Eric’s nod to his college dream of becoming a broadcast journalist. Viewers watch a video from the anchor’s point of view. All we see is the microphone as the off-screen anchor scrambles to interview a series of flighty cats that bear an uncanny resemblance to celebrities fleeing from ardent reporters. In addition to his talent on the page, Eric also demonstrates unbelievable dedication and endurance in a piece called “Analogous to the Fall of That One Empire (Moby Dick.)” Using a pair of fingernail scissors, Eric cut out and alphabetized every single letter, punctuation mark, and number in Herman Melville’s classic, Moby Dick and then arranged them in discrete piles on a circle of mirrors. I’m still ambivalent as to whether that kind of fortitude is ridiculous good or ridiculous bad. Not only did I enjoy the food and the art very much, but Cori and Aviva continually introduced me to a slew of interesting people modeling remarkable footwear. If this evening was any indication of what my summer is going to be like, the next three months promise to be action-packed. But not to worry; I am adventure ready.
We were so very happy to help local wedding photographer Eliza, and her writer-man Steve with their May 16th nuptials at Pravda Studios. There couldn’t be a more laid-back bride and groom and we had tons of fun with them, from making glitzy pinata by hand to setting up the kid’s corner at the reception to kicking off the processional with a tune from “A Mighty Wind”. These two are a great pair and we love them. We also had a great time with the whole wedding team: hair and makeup artist Erin Skipley, photog Sean Flanigan, florist Christopher Flowers, caterer Ravishing Radish and the sweet soul sounds of Emerald City Soul Club. Check out their beautiful day in May!
All photos by the sweet and talented, Sean Flanigan.
One of our totally great former wedding clients, D.W. Burnam, will be playing music tonight at Fancy with his band Katharine Hepburn’s Voice. D.W. is totally awesome and we are psyched to check him out tonight. Listen to KHV here. We heart their song “Space Needle”! Also, maybe you can be super efficient tonight and buy some jewels for your mom for Mother’s Day from Sally at Fancy. And the date is the 4th of July! Yes, folks, The Adventure School is producing the Cal Anderson Park Alliance 7th Annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic and we want you there!
It is free to the community and will be a rockin’ time. This 4th of July picnic spectacular will embody and activate the transcendent energy of the park. Everyone is welcome at this family-centric mini-festival, from 12 to 5pm with a stage for music and loads of activities. Not to mention that all Capitol Hillsters and those who love them are invited to make a picnic of it and do their own patriotic thing with the help of such food vendors as Via Tribunali and Caffe Vita! See you at Cal Anderson Park on July 4th from 12 to 5pm! Big ups to The Berger Partnership for the photo (AND DESIGN) of the park. | ||||
